What Materials Are Used to Make a Battery?

Written By:  on January 31, 2010 No Comment

A billion batteries! Ensure that we are in a mobile society, it makes sense that batteries are everywhere, and the likelihood that you will buy an internal battery is pretty high before. For the purchase of batteries is a daily and regular occurrence. Conservative talk billion batteries are purchased each year. Have from my own curiosity and maybe even your own, and the huge amounts of raw that are used need to go into the manufacture of a battery thought and thoughtI shares my findings.

The construction of a battery requires certain components and the associated impact on raw that ultimately the price of the batteries. The basic battery components include:

The battery housing
The battery chemistry
The battery electrolyte
The battery is special hardware

The battery housing

The purpose of a battery housing for enclosing and hermetically sealing a battery body converts the chemical energy into electrical energyto generate electricity to power an electronic device. Battery case is made in layers. The case develops layers of different and can be one or two, include, for example, polyethylene terephthalate layers, a polymer layer and a polypropylene layer. Another example is a case with layers of charred plastic.

The battery chemistry

As mentioned above, a battery is a device that converts chemical energy into electrical energy. To convert chemicalEnergy into electrical energy the battery must contain the chemical precursors to experience a conversion. Are common types of chemicals in batteries on the market today used:

1st nickel-cadmium batteries were first invented in 1899 and are a mature forms of energy with moderate energy density. Used nickel-cadmium batteries, to vote where a long life, high discharge and the extended temperature range is important. The main applications for nickel-cadmium batteries for two-way radios, biomedical devices and tools.

2nd nickel-metal hydride batteries have a higher energy density compared to nickel-cadmium, but greatly reduced at the expense of durability. Applications include mobile phones and laptops does not take much to be talked about here since the nickel-metal hydride batteries are not often more portable for consumers.

3rd lead-acid batteries are the most economical portable power source for greater powerApplications where the weight of secondary importance. Lead-acid is the preferred choice for hospital equipment, wheelchairs, emergency lighting and UPS systems. The most common place where most of us lead-acid batteries in our cars. Automobiles, light trucks and vans almost always used with a 12-volt, six cell, negative grounded, lead-acid car batteries to run gasoline or diesel engines. They found lead-acid batteries in motorcycles, boats, snowmobiles, jet skis,Tractors, lawn and garden tractors, SUVs, etc.

4th lithium-ion batteries are widely used today because they offer significant advantages for portable consumer. Lithium is the lightest of all metals, it is the greatest electrochemical potential and the highest energy density for its weight. The load properties of lithium are quite good in terms of discharge. The high cell voltage of 3.6 volts allows battery pack designs with only one cell less compared to three (expensiveand compact). Is a lithium-ion battery with low maintenance no memory and no scheduled cycling is required to extend the battery life. And eventually cause lithium-ion cells with little damage when disposed of.

5th lithium-ion polymer batteries are very similar, lithium ion, but with a much leaner geometry and simple packaging, but obviously at a higher cost per watt / hour. Main applications are cell phones and PDAs. The lithium-polymer differentiates itself from theconventional battery in the type of electrolyte (a plastic film, such as the electricity does not come forward, but allows ion exchange - electrically charged atoms or groups of atoms). The polymer electrolyte replaces the traditional porous separator, which is impregnated with electrolyte. The dry polymer design offers simplifications with regard to manufacture, robustness, safety and thin-profile geometry. Cell thickness measures as little as one millimeter (0.039 inch). Can be lithium polymerformed and shaped in any way imagined. Commercial lithium-polymer batteries are hybrid cells that contain gelled electrolyte to improve conductivity. Gelled electrolyte added to the lithium-ion polymer replaces the porous separator. The gelled electrolyte is simply added to enhance ion conductivity

The capacity is slightly less than the standard lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion polymer finds its market niche in wafer-thin geometries, such as PDA batteries. Lithium-ion also providesImprove safety - more resistant to overload, less chance for electrolyte leakage.

6th Reusable Alkaline Batteries - The limited life span and low load current is balanced by a long shelf life, so this battery ideal for portable entertainment devices and flashlights. Great batteries if you want to save on energy demand for an emergency.

The battery electrolyte

The actual conversion of chemical energy into electrochemical energy can only be done if aFlow of electrons passes between two electrodes) of an anode (the positive end) and a cathode (negative end. The battery is electrical current (electron flow) runs from one electrode to the other through a conductive chemical called an electrolyte solution.

A basic electrolyte solution is a chemical compound (salt, acid or base), when dissolved in a solvent forms a solution, the ionic conductor of electricity. In the battery cell the electrolyte solution is the implementation ofMedium in which it made the flow of current between the electrodes by the migrating electrons.

Since the 1970 is well known that adding salts to polymers, the lithium-ion polymer could allow behavior. This material may thus serve as an electrolyte in lithium batteries. Lithium solid polymer electrolyte batteries, when given full measure to the capacity for miniaturization of a fully solid state battery can be charged the highest specific energy and specific power have onerechargeable technology.

Some of the benefits that lithium solid polymer electrolytes include:

simple production
Immunity from leakage
Suppression of lithium dendrite formation
Elimination of volatile organic liquids
mechanical flexibility

The battery is special hardware

A battery consists of more than the housing, electrolyte and the chemical. It requires some very specific hardware, especially when we talk directly to an intelligent battery.Your typical smart battery can play a variety of hardware components that create when working in tandem not only electricity and then transfer them to a particular device, but also sends packets of information to the device so that the device actually the battery gauge (at least) in the theory. Some of the popular hardware features in a smart battery include:

the plug
securing
the charge and discharge FETs
the cell pack
the sense resistor (RSENSE)
primaryand subsidiary protection ICs
the fuel-gauge IC
the thermistor
the board
EEPROM or firmware for the fuel-gauge IC.

After much research, I am satisfied with my purchase.

Pros: lightweight, thin, at least 9 hours of battery standby and off mode WiFi antenna (connected to the Ethernet cable on my desk), two-finger scrolling, the small power supply module.

Cons: Touch pad too sensitive and not bluetooth.

This is my 3rd Mac laptop. To all, I have used for many years with everyday use in the long term.
